The Skylark Academy building seen from the park
The school

A modern, spacious and eco-friendly school.

Where we are, how big we are, what the building looks like — and all the technology inside it.

Where is it?

Our school is located in Greenfield.

Our school is located in the north of Greenfield. It is between a big park and the river, so the view from the classrooms is impressive.

It has got two buildings, a sports complex and a big garden. The buses 14 and 27 stop in front of the school.

There are 720 students, between 11 and 18 years old. There are only 18 students in a class.

📍

Where?

14 Orchard Lane, Greenfield — between the park and the river.

📏

How big?

3 hectares, 2 buildings, 42 classrooms and a sports complex.

👥

How many students?

720 students aged 11 to 18, and 64 teachers.

🌱

How green?

100% of our electricity comes from the solar panels on the roof.

What does it look like?

It looks like a greenhouse, not like a factory.

It looks like a big greenhouse, because the walls are made of glass and wood and there are plants on the roof. The classrooms are bright, spacious and colourful, and every floor has a different colour, so we never get lost.

The building is designed to be comfortable and eco-friendly. The windows are very big, so we do not need electric light during the day. The furniture is modern and we can move it easily.

In the middle of the school there is a garden with trees and benches. We call it "the nest".

What facilities are there?

Everything a student needs, under one glass roof

There are 42 classrooms, but also a lot of other places.

The Glasshouse Library

The Glasshouse Library

Two floors, 14 000 books and 30 computers. It is open from 8 a.m. to 6.30 p.m.

A science laboratory

Six laboratories

Three for physics and chemistry, two for biology and one for technology.

The sports complex

The sports complex

A big sports hall, a 25-metre swimming pool, an athletics track, two football pitches and a climbing wall.

The cafeteria

The cafeteria

There are two hot menus every day and one is always vegetarian. There is also a terrace in the garden.

The art studios

Art & music studios

Two art studios, a recording studio and four rooms for the rehearsals.

A relaxation area with sofas and plants

Relaxation areas

Three rooms with sofas, plants and a piano, and a quiet room. There is more on page 3.

Technology

A school designed by engineers

We are STI2D students, so this is our favourite part. Here are the nine technologies of our school.

Students wearing virtual reality headsets
Technology 1

Virtual reality

Students use VR headsets to visit different countries or to look inside a human heart.

A student using the school app on a phone
Technology 2

AI assistants

An AI assistant answers our questions and helps us to revise, but it never does our homework.

A small robot in a classroom
Technology 3

Robots

Robots help teachers with repetitive tasks. They prepare the material of the laboratories.

A 3D printer at work
Technology 4

3D printers

There are eight 3D printers and they are free. You send your file and you take your object the next day.

A drone flying above the school
Technology 5

Drones

The drone club built two drones. They film the sports competitions.

An interactive smartboard in a classroom
Technology 6

Smartboards

Every classroom has a smartboard. The lesson is saved, so an ill student can read it at home.

A connected classroom with sensors
Technology 7

Smart classrooms

Sensors measure the air and the temperature. The windows open automatically when there is too much CO₂.

Solar panels on the school roof
Technology 8

Solar panels

Solar panels produce electricity for the school. A screen in the hall shows the production.

Connected lockers in a corridor
Technology 9

Connected lockers

The lockers open with our student card, so we never lose a key.

How long is a lesson?

Four lessons of 90 minutes a day

In other schools there are six or seven short lessons. Here there are only four long lessons, so our bags are lighter.

Subjects taught

Twelve subjects, one curriculum

All the students study the same subjects. From Year 10, they choose two specialities.

  • 📐 Mathematics
  • 🔬 Sciences (Physics · Chemistry · Biology)
  • 📚 English Literature
  • 🇫🇷 French
  • 🇪🇸 Spanish
  • 🌍 History & Geography
  • 💻 Computer Science
  • 🛠️ Engineering & Design
  • 🎨 Visual Arts
  • 🎵 Music
  • 🏃 Physical Education
  • 🧠 Philosophy & Debate
🧪

Half of every science lesson is practical

The lessons are long and there are six laboratories, so we have the time to finish our experiments.

🛠️

Engineering from Year 9

Electronics, programming and 3D printing, like in STI2D but four years earlier.

🌐

Two languages for everybody

English and Spanish for all students, with exchange trips to Lyon and Seville in Year 9.
